Comprehensive Design and Installation of EV Chargers Across Auckland

Project Overview

Auckland Transport embarked on a project to enhance the infrastructure for electric vehicle (EV) charging across multiple sites in Auckland. Conductive was engaged to provide a comprehensive design solution, while Alpha Rail was tasked with the installation. This case study outlines the key deliverables and solutions provided by Conductive for Auckland Transport’s project.

Design Phase

Concept Design and SID Risk Assessment Review
Conductive began by developing Concept Designs, followed by a Safety in Design and Risk Assessment (SID/RA) review. This review involved relevant stakeholders to assess the designs and determine the best way forward for detailed design development. Key components of the Concept Design included:

  • Existing Layouts: Documentation of the current state of each site.
  • Proposed Layouts: Development of new design layouts tailored to project requirements.

Detailed Design
The next phase involved creating detailed design drawings to facilitate on-site construction. This included the Issue for Construction (IFC) documentation. Essential elements of the detailed design were:

  • Existing Layouts: Comprehensive documentation of current site conditions.
  • Proposed Layouts: Detailed new design layouts.
  • Set Out Drawings: Precise layout drawings for construction.
  • Constructability Review: Evaluation to ensure designs were feasible and practical.
  • Service Information: Inclusion of all relevant service details.
  • Structural Designs: Structural design elements as required.
  • Details and Sections: Detailed sectional drawings and specific details.
  • Signage Layouts: Design of appropriate signage.
  • Earthing and Bonding Design: Design for earthing and bonding, if necessary.
  • Lighting Design: Lighting solutions where required.

Solution

Conductive’s design solution encompassed the following key aspects:

Electrical EV Charger Installation Design:
Comprehensive electrical and civil design for new EV charger installations.

High Voltage (HV) Cabling:
Supply and installation of new HV cabling from Vector’s point of supply to the transformer and ring main unit (RMU) with a 5-module setup.

Transformer and RMU Design and Installation:
Design, supply, and installation of a 1.5MVA transformer (subject to design) and new RMU in a sealed enclosure, mounted on a portable platform.

Outdoor Switchboard Installation:
Design a 2500A outdoor switchboard with provisions for current and future chargers, including revenue metering.

Ducting & Cabling Installation:
Design of new ducting and cabling from the switchboard to charger locations, along with associated civil works.

Civil Works:
Trenching, concrete cutting, and reinstatement, ensuring all civil works are completed to high standards.

Reinforced Concrete Pads:
Design of new 200mm thick, 40MPA reinforced concrete pads for chargers and switchboard/transformer.

Installation and Commissioning:
Installation and commissioning of one Raption150 charger at Quay Street, Auckland, and two Terra 184 chargers at Panmure, Auckland.

Protective Bollards:
Supply and installation of two bollards per charger to protect the chargers.

Coordination and Management:
Effective coordination and management of Vector and associated HV contractors for HV design and installation.

Adherence to Standards:

Our design and implementation adhered to the following standards, ensuring compliance with industry best practices:

  • BS EN 50122.1: Railway applications – Fixed installations – Electrical safety, earthing, and the return circuit.
  • E-St-AE-0101: Electrical safety standards for railway installations.
  • E-SP-AE-61318: Standards for the protection against electric shock in railway applications.

Conclusion

Conductive’s design solutions ensured the successful completion of Auckland Transport’s EV charger installation project, meeting all technical and safety requirements, and providing a scalable infrastructure for future expansions. The project not only enhanced the efficiency and safety of EV charger installations but also supported Auckland’s transition to sustainable transport solutions.
